In the spring of 969, when the Pechenegs besieged Kyiv, Siversk Voivode Pretych well organized the defence of the city. As Sviatoslav with a large part of his army waged a campaign at that time, Pretych with a small detachment managed to save Kyiv from plundering by the nomads using clever diplomatic and military steps.
